Attack Range
Attack Range determines how far a unit can use their standard autoattacks on. Attack ranges are split into two categories: Melee and Ranged.

Melee vs. Ranged[edit | edit source]
Melee units, as their name suggests, have a short attack range. Almost all melee heroes have an attack range of 150. Sir Benzington is the only melee hero who can extend his attack range. Melee units' attacks do not have a travel time, and strike instantly once their startup animation ends.
Ranged units have attacks that attack further away. All ranged heroes have at least 350 range (just slightly above Sir Benzington without Lance-A-Long active), most of them possessing an Attack Range between 500 and 600, with Emerald Warden having the longest default attack range of 625. Ranged attacks have a missile speed associated with their attacks, determining how fast their attack projectiles move, and in turn, how long it takes for their attacks to connect. In addition, a Wingbow increases a ranged hero's attack range by 100.
While ranged attacks are inherently superior the melee attacks, there are a few benefits that only melee heroes can receive. A handful of items have better effects on melee heroes such as Logger's Hatchet and Frostwolf's Skull, and gain more benefits from certain effects, such as Abyssal Skull's Lifesteal aura. However, a few abilities benefit only ranged units, such as Moon Queen's Lunar Glow aura.
Ranged units are also subjected to uphill miss chance, which gives them a 25% chance to miss their attack if they target a unit that is standing in higher terrain (except when attacking a Ward of Sight or Ward of Revelation). Ranged attacks can also be disjointed by certain abilities while the projectile is in motion.
